Brother, Come Home
www.facebook.com/WRRPoetry [Brother, Come Home]
Ndubuisi, since you left
Our eyeballs have fallen off their sockets…
Since you chose to reside in the
White man’s land

Our moon has turned pale
Rocks fall from the skies
While the rain has refused to
Depart the blue cloud

It is the heart’s heaviness that has
Given eloquence to the tongue

Ndubuisi my beloved brother
Since you chose the white man’s knowledge
Papa has shattered our hut with his teeth

Ndubuisi
Do you remember Onyekaozuru, papa’s classmate..
The one that broke our cane chair
With the left part of his buttocks?
Ndubuisi, his brain has been split apart
By the September thunder

Ndubuisi my dearest brother
Do you still remember uncle Ukaegbu?
He now swims inside the river of palm wine

Ndubuisi, when the sun was busy flaunting her glory
Ukaegbu ran into chief Ukala’s obi
Sliced off the right ear of his wife Akunne
And fed it to a jocund he-goat

Ndubuisi,
Do you still remember the Agbudu forest, near Araogbe square?
Alaka has set it on fire
Innocent animals are now on swift stampede
Helpless, they seek refuge in farms

Ndubuisi, do you still remember our banana farm?
It has been turned into a cemetery

Ndubuisi please come home
For when the air is fouled
By a man on top of a palm tree;
The fly is confused

Come home my brother
For when a man sees an unfamiliar sight;
Then his death might be near

Ndubuisi
Please come home,
Before the sun decides to pay us a visit
