Words Rhymes & Rhythm is calling for entries for the JUNE edition of the Brigitte Poirson Poetry Contest (BPPC) on the theme: “TRADITIONS AND CULTURE”.

Organized in honor of Brigitte Poirson, French poet and lecturer, editor and promoter of African poetry, the BPPC is a monthly contest designed to identify and reward the under-appreciated poetic talents of Nigerian poets.

The contest will culminate into the Albert Jungers Poetry Prize (AJPP) which will be awarded in January 2016.

Four winners have emerged since the competition began — Samson Oluwatoyin (February), Chika Onwuasoanya Tobi (March), Ikenna C. Igwe (April) and May Winner, Showunmi Olawale Michael. The May edition was themed “A PEOPLE’S HOPE”.

Prize to be won

  1. A cash prize of N5000 and a copy of ‘What Can Words Do?’ by Kukogho Iruesiri Samson will be awarded to the overall best poem
  2. Authors of the top three poems will be awarded a certificate each
  3. All top 10 poems will be automatically entered for the Albert Jungers Poetry Prize (AJPP)
  4. All top 10 poems will be published in an anthology in January 2016.
  5. Submission deadline is midnight Friday June 26th 2015.

Guidelines:

  1. Contestants are invited to submit one poem on the theme: “TRADITIONS AND CULTURE”.
  2. Submissions should be sent to submissions@wrr.ng
  3. All entries must be the original work of the poet submitting it.
  4. No ATTACHMENTS, submit poem and other details as body of mail.
  5. The CONTEST NAME AND POEM TITLE must be mentioned clearly, as the subject of the e-mail. For example:  “Brigitte Poirson Poetry Contest: DEAD CULTURES”
  6. The maximum length of the poem should be one page, i.e. 30 lines (plus the title).
  7. Authors must provide their full names [and Facebook ID for identification] and a 50-100 word biography in the body of the e-mail.
  8. Nigerian residents in any part of the world are eligible.
  9. Entries are free.

Note that:

  1. Poems containing profanity, racism or vulgarity will be disqualified.
  2. The poems will be judged based on their artistic quality and creativity.
  3. The judges’ decision is final and under no circumstances will they enter into any correspondence with entrants regarding their decisions.
