What a country?
After many years of perpetual suffering
We breathed sighs of relief
The eras of the vicious men are gone
The eras of rampant looting of the nation’s coffer are gone
We were free at last
Who could signal our hope for the future?
A hope for a better tomorrow
We were all awake
Dancing to the frantic rhythm of the drum
Drum of hope, drum of assurance
Then along the way, silence…
As if it had been written on the wall
The going gets tough, tougher than before
Piercing our hearts abruptly
And betraying all promises made in full glare
Our leaders are a colossal failure
Flushed into the river of myopism
They bury their consciences in the dung heaps
And torture us with unperturbed minds
Our thoughts of hopeful dreams are gone
Leaving the nation bleeding
Swimming and squirming in moral stupor
Social and economic freedom are in rapid danger
We are all afraid
In palpable fears we bury our heads in sands
Like ostrich as the problem persists
What a country?
As fear grips our innermost being
With our faces ashen and blank
And most amazing our tenacious hopes
For the tide has turned
From the pinnacle of fame to the abyss of shame
For as long as the forest grows without worries
For as long as the oceans flow without stopping
Facing the reality of a blunt and carefree society
With scars of unruly democracy and tribal imperfections
Most saddening our shameless degrees of corruption and inflation
We raise our trunks with burning patriotic desires
To create the country filled with pride and goodwill
This country is ours to toil
In hope for future benefits
Like comrades we are
Let’s put a sun in every night
With might and main
And contribute in shaping the course of our history.
So, there’s hope after all!
