I Pledge To Nigeria
www.facebook.com/WRRPoetry [I Pledge To Nigeria]
“I pledge to Nigeria my country
To be faithful, loyal and honest”
Did we write this?

Since our glorious inception
These words, anchor of our Deception
We renew every morning
Truthful lies, stunning!

I recall my zealous recital in school
Surely, I must have been a fool
For then, even thieves, solemnly swore
“…To be faithful, loyal and honest!”

Oh Yes! We are honest, trampling on the poor!
Oh! We are faithful, killing each other!
Leaders are to our cries ever deaf
They “love their money as themselves”

Was this our pledge?
“To be unfaithful, disloyal and dishonest”?
I seek not a new anthem, nor a new pledge
But new hearts uttering words of truth

In a naturally blessed society
With people of outspoken piety
We destroy ourselves… without remorse

My unspoken question, my hidden dilemma;
If I journey to the bridges of choice
Compared to my predecessors
Would I do worse?
