I owe my purest gratitude to thee,
For thou hast bestowed on me this food
To soothe my bonfire, so shrewd!
Food, yes, a mortal’s prime necessity
Have I got by thy grace and pity,
Whereas millions have none on this earth,
Which is to ’em but a damned birth!
In this life thou hast helped me a lot,
Protected me from every Judas-plot.
I thank thee from the deepest core of my heart
For thou’rt with me on this land of dirt!
