FRIEND

Read Time:1 Minute, 4 Second

www.facebook.com/WRRPoetry [Friend]
I am captivated by the picture frames on his wall
Of present colleagues and childhood friends
But how could he keep this?
Uncovering memories underneath buried
Some relished moments, others very bitter
Looking at the pictures I cannot count the heads

The crowd, as with most kids
Was too much for one to handle
But how he managed it only God knows
Maybe that’s why we should be
In innocence like kids

Now I look at him talking in retrospect
Of sweet childhood friends
And the memories they shared
And how 20 friends cannot stick in 20 years
And the new people he meets
Like Gift, Ebony, Ubeng, Ese, Tosin

Was his experience peculiar to him
Or is it the new world order
Maybe some words should change
Or better still be obsolete
Like FRIEND

Maybe PARTNER would be better
Considering capitalism’s role
The role materialism plays
Or selfishness… or hunger for influence plays
Or greed… well whatever you call it

It’s but for a season or seasons
Probably, but not a lifetime
But the definition individuals give it
Reflect their personalities
And it shows in their actions
