‘EJIMA’ (a poem by Vivian Nnagboro)

Read Time:49 Second
I heard mother’s shaky voice.
She felt like she had just one left.

You have made the powder your god.
Offering up your life as sacrifice.

The pills are communion to you,
Each one bringing you closer to the most high.

The prophet’s cane, though a weapon
For destruction, seeks salvation for you.

You came into the world first
And you’ve been ahead in everything

It is only fair you’d be the first
To break our parents’ heart.

Your promises are like wind, empty.
Yet they give me hope.

A scar for every one of your relapses.
Reminds me of how I’d failed you.

When you stopped fighting,
It felt like life had failed you too.

We came into this world together;
If you must go, then I will follow.

NB: Ejima means twins in Igbo
