Drumbeats,
Dawn met her again on her rickety stool.
Her eyes had seen what her mouth would always whisper;
Was it Ashake’s adoption
(Aye! That was her name –
The one the gods have chosen)
Or Alade’s calamitous journey?

She had watched the procession
Rushed slowly by,
Bearing upon their shoulders
A blindfolded young man.

And just the previous day before that,
She had watched Ashake’s willing adoption;
She had seen the mother
Run so swiftly and bitterly
With her wagging tongue
And the father ,whose tools
Trailing in his wake, was
Dragged across the street
With lifeless feet digging trenches.

Drumbeats,
The gods had indeed spoken
But would that it were their last…
She sighed.
