Dawn met her again on her rickety stool.<br>
Her eyes had seen what her mouth would always whisper;<br>
Was it Ashake’s adoption<br>
(Aye! That was her name –<br>
The one the gods have chosen)<br>
Or Alade’s calamitous journey?
<p>She had watched the procession<br>
Rushed slowly by,<br>
Bearing upon their shoulders<br>
A blindfolded young man.</p>
<p>And just the previous day before that,<br>
She had watched Ashake’s willing adoption;<br>
She had seen the mother<br>
Run so swiftly and bitterly<br>
With her wagging tongue<br>
And the father ,whose tools<br>
Trailing in his wake, was<br>
Dragged across the street<br>
With lifeless feet digging trenches.</p>
<p>Drumbeats,<br>
The gods had indeed spoken<br>
But would that it were their last…<br>
She sighed.</p>
