POVERTY by Ololade Akinlabi

Yesterday was a dream
Today is reality
Tomorrow is a drab vision
Our territory can no longer

Our households dance in penniless
dance, backward, towards the
red moses sea.
Starvation is an intimate
to our children

Women, can no longer
hold the milk pumping machine
our filthy foetus suck
from the drab milk machine
virginity was a pride of yesterday

Men with strength are
now folk tales
Why are we here?
No one knows
But we knew
our yesterday was a day dream
today is reality
tomorrow is a dead dream.
