TREES by Tukur Ridwan Ishola

we are all born
unto this barren earth
to live, and let live
and then leave
by being buried
to fertilize the soils
that make the graveyards
an abode for trees
to grow and glow in greens…
and these trees are metaphors
for an earth…inhabitable
by we…the leaves
as we are the leaves
living along the branches…our homes
and as we glow,
and grow out of our pigments…our skins
and fall, and die
so do we leave our homes
to lace the earth with our bodies…
but the trees
will ever remain the same
as we come by birth,
and grow, and go by death
but these trees can be fallen
by our hands…weapons and cuts
that destroy our branches…homes
in forms of wars
and all that accompanies,
so as the earth is befallen
of its hospitable reputation
among other planets
by our ways…whims…wars…woes
against the wishes of the trees
to remain in the future
as a story of the pasts…
a story to be told
of how we come and go.
