AFRIKA THE SLEEPING GIANT by Ololade Akinlabi

Far from home…..
Beyond the sea is where we reside
Where shivering usher out
Our glowing teeth not to smile
But to beckon to the frigid weather
Our complexion is seldom
Negroes is what they call us
Yet pride bestows in our skin

Far away from home……..
That evening granny folktales
Lie in pieces of paper here…..
As black-ink fables

Far away from home…..
Hello, the appearance, the Disappearance of the smile-frown
Moon that marks the beginning and the end of AJE market…..
Over the sea where we dwell
The moon is just a space

At home where we are…..
Our patience is curious
As we peep over the sea
Cracks open the doors of
Our homes for intruder

Folktales now parables in
Black ink…..
As granny refuses to uncover the
Sandy blanket entangling her body
and soul…..
Our folktales are dead
Only the particles linger in our brain

Yet we peep over the sea
Till our village square root out
graves
Cemetery is what non-negroes call it

Alas! Our heroes now
Living-corpses
Sleeping like a toothless lion……
Yet over the sea we peep……..
