REVIEW: ‘A WALK IN HER SHOES’ IS UNPRETENTIOUS, “EMINENTLY READABLE AND RELATABLE” WITH DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES
A WALK IN HER SHOES is a book conceived during a conversation between Yewande and Tomisin about school, friends and how young people are dealing with life issues. In analysing the underlying reasons why some teenagers will choose the path they are set on, both mother and daughter realized that they had differing points of view on some issues including in defining what is ‘good’ or ‘bad’.
They concluded that ‘different’ should not be a bad word in mother-daughter relationships but ‘conversations’ should be a word adopted in homes to manage those differences. This book is about appreciating the perspectives of a mother and a daughter about issues of fashion/dressing, boyfriend, values, discipline etc.
A Walk In Her Shoes calls on teenagers to look beyond the fuss mothers make over many issues and rather see their quest to make their ‘babies’ safe and successful in life’s endeavours. It also reminds mothers that their daughters are growing up in a different generation and the best friend they should have on this journey is their mother; everyday nagging and put-down will only dent that relationship.
It amplifies the voice of a mother and a teenage daughter in reflective, truthful and funny ways; in ways that resonate with the experiences of the old and the aspirations of the younger generation.
